BASIC STEPS IN VIPASSANA MEDITATION
OF THE SIX STATES OF CONSCIOUSNESS (BHUMI 6)
For Dharma practitioners who have already some knowledge about Dharma rules as well as about Rupa-Khandha, Nama, Sankhara, Dhatu, Ayatana and Arrom, and who are able to start practising Dharma, some of the basic steps for them may be as follow:-
Pray to the Triple Gems
Chanting the Buddhaguna Mantra
Chanting the Dharmaguna Mantra
Chanting the Sanghaguna Mantra
Offering Oneself to Lord Buddha
Offering Oneself to Guru
Requesting Kammathana from a Guru
Nibbhamatsa Me Bhante Satsikalamatthaya
Kammatthanangdhemi (Respected Guru, please provide me Kammatthana so that I can see the light of Nibbhana)
After receiving the Kammathana from the Guru, return to your place and start praying to the Triple Gems once more. Then start your meditation. You can sit cross-leg if you wish, but make sure that you feel comfortable with your sitting position. You can sit cross-leg like Lord Buddha by placing your right leg above you left leg and your right hand placing over your left hand. Your body must be straight. Your eye sight should be about half a meter from your legs. Concentrate and examine the disintegration of the Sankhara, Rupa-Nama. Also, do not forget to bless loving kindness to yourself and others. Concentrate your awareness (Sati) on the disintegration of the Rupa-Nama.
Once your eyes see a picture, use your awareness (Sati) to examine only the picture. Do not allow your awareness to drift away to examine what has been assumed, for example, the beauty of the picture, like or dislike. Continue your concentration;
When your ears hear a sound, use your awareness (Sati) to examine the sound only. Do not allow your Sati to drift away to examine what has been assumed;
When your noses smell an odour, use your awareness to examine the odour only. Do not allow your awareness to wander to examine what has been assumed, for example, the odour is good or bad;
When your tongue is tasting something, use your awareness to examine the taste only. Do not allow your awareness to drift away to examine what has been assumed, for example the taste is good or bad;
When your body is feeling hot or cold, smooth or coarse, use your awareness to examine what is hot or cold, smooth or coarse. Do not allow your awareness to drift away to examine what has been assumed, for example, the feeling is good, bad, like or dislike;
When your Citta is thinking or gives order to sit down, stand up, move, sleep, lie down use your awareness to examine the thinking only. Do not allow your awareness to examine what has been assumed, for example, we sit down we stand up, we sleep, we move etc..
In conclusion, use your present feeling only. What had happened is the past. Do not think about the past. Also, do not think about the future as it has not happened yet. Do not wait for the future. What is important is the present only.
